Mike decided to start a business, so now Jen is along for the ride...

Mike's Bio: Rumor has it that I was born taking things apart. At least from a very early age, I was taking apart all of my toys, things around the house - anything that fascinated me, which was things that were motorized, lit up or made sound. My parents started buying me electronics kits for Christmas and birthdays. I was hooked. In high school, I attended Quincy Voc Tech and my shop was electronics, of course. What had always been a hobby started to become a real thing. The beginning of my electronics career started at Radio Shack trying to sell TVs to people who just wanted a fuse and 4 AA batteries and came to an end after I had been with Bose Corporation for over 18 years in a variety of technical roles ranging from Lab Technician to Applications Technologist to Audio/Video Producer to Creative and Technical Presentation Specialist to Software Developer. In between, I worked at a bunch of electronics repair depots, including the one I built from the ground up at Siemens. In the 90’s it was a lot of PC repair shops, Motorola and Datel, where I was a Failure Analysis Engineer working on Switch Mode Power Supplies. While I was still at Bose, I had gone down the rabbit hole that is Sim Racing and had been working on my racing setup in my spare time. As that project became more and more complex, I needed to have custom parts made. That’s when I became interested in getting a CNC machine of my own. That’s also when I realized that I could just design and build one for much less than it would cost to buy one. At this point, I’ve built 4 CNC machines in all. The early ones were just prototypes and were embarrassingly low powered. The newest machine I have is a rebuild of an old AccuCut machine that I replaced all of the original electronics on. I n never had any plan to do custom CNC woodworking. I had already built a really sturdy machine, so after watching some YouTube videos on 3D carving models from wood, I decided to give it a shot. The rest is history!

How we got started...

Machined In Wood started as a side hustle while Mike was still working for Bose Corporation. It began to grow once he was laid off during Covid and had more time to devote to it. Since then, it has evolved to meet the demands of the wide range of projects that have been keeping the shop busy ever since 2020.

"I had been playing around with CNC machines for a while, making parts for a full motion racing simulator and other hobbies, and only decided to use it for woodworking after seeing some YouTube videos of 3D carvings. I had also been playing around with 3D printing and laser engraving machines for a little while, so getting into CNC was a natural fit."

All of this started because I needed custom parts for my Sim Racing Rig!

Not long after we decided to do this full time, we had an opportunity to take on a manufacturing role for a company that sells its products all around the world. Their existing vendor was going out of business and they needed to replace them quickly, so we were thrown into the crucible of learning everything about their manufacturing processes and figuring out how we could do the same work, but out of our house instead of a 50,000 square foot factory.

Another mid-scale production run that we did. This one was for 500 pieces of this cool design, in hard maple.

It took a lot of work, upgrading a lot of our equipment, gaining a lot of hard earned experience and knowledge, doing a lot of things twice and developing our skills to be able to meet the very high standards that our predecessors had established. I'm proud to say that today we make those parts year round, meeting the quality control standards for fit and finish on many hundreds of parts per year. Unfortunately, we are under NDA and can't say what it is that we make or who it is that we're making parts for...

Aside from the production work, we have always offered CNC and traditional woodworking services, as well as laser engraving and finishing, to local customers and people who find us on the internet from around the country. We always love a challenge, so we end up taking on all sorts of projects with all sorts of customers.
